About Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER)
The Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research is a public research institute based in Ibadan. The centre is one of the most prominent publicly financed think tanks in the country. Before the establishment of NISER, colonial officials founded the West African Institute of Social and Economic Research.
The centre was formed in 1950 and is headquartered in Ibadan. Its purpose is to provide knowledge on economic and social ideas that will be critical to the development of British West African countries.
The institute was linked with the University of Ibadan and received state funding. Ghana gained political independence in 1957 and chose to leave the institute.
After Nigeria attained independence in 1960, the institute’s name was changed to the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research
