About Federal Medical Center, Owo
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria, was founded in 1993 as one of the country’s first federal medical centres. The hospital, which spans 58.4 hectares, is Ondo State’s only federal tertiary health centre and referral hospital.
The hospital is located in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, some 48 kilometres from the state capital, Akure. The hospital serves adjacent states like Kogi, Edo, and Osun.
The hospital was originally built by the then-Ondo state government, but was taken over by the Federal Government in 1989.
In accordance with Federal Government policy, which established a Federal Medical Centre in states without a Federal Teaching Hospital, the hospital was designated as a Federal Medical Centre, with the pioneer Board and Medical Director appointed in June 1993.
Since its inception, it has experienced enormous growth in terms of facilities and manpower. It now has 350 beds, with approximately 85% occupancy.
It has advanced laboratory and radiographic diagnostic facilities, including a molecular laboratory for diagnosing infectious disorders such as Lassa fever, COVID-19, and cholera.
