About the Federal Polytechnic, Oko
The polytechnic is located in Oko municipality, Orumba North Local Government, Anambra State. The polytechnic’s foundation was the brainchild of the Oko Progressive Union (OPU), which was significantly influenced by the patronage, resourcefulness, and result-oriented leadership of its pioneer chairman, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, a former Executive Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The institution was established in 1979 as a College of Arts and Science that was approved by the Anambra State Government. Its purpose was to prepare candidates for the General Certificate in Education (GCE) examination at both the ordinary and advanced levels.
The institution was upgraded to the College of Arts, Science, and Technology on June 28, 1980. This change in status attracted a large number of young school leavers who sought the higher certificate that the College could then award.
Edict No. 12 of 1985, which was published as a supplement to the Anambra State of Nigeria Gazette No. 24, Volume 10 of June 27, 1984, formalised the College as the Anambra State Polytechnic, Oko.
Ultimately, the Federal Government assumed control of the State Polytechnic in 1993, and it was subsequently renamed the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
