The Reaching Out of School Children (ROOSC) Project is being implemented by Save the Children Nigeria in Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria. This project is designed to assist crisis-affected out-of-school children and is funded by Educate a Child, Islamic Development Bank, Global Partnership in Education, Kuwait Fund, and Save the Children.
The “Reaching Out of School Children (ROOSC) Project” is a four-year initiative that aims to assist crisis-affected out of school children (aged 6-14) in the State of Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria, in exercising their equal rights to quality education and gender equality (GE).
About the job
The “Reaching out of school children in Kaduna State (ROOSC)” program helps the state government provide quality primary education to all children of official primary school age and adolescents and young people. As project beneficiaries, marginalized and impoverished populations will receive special attention. Project strategies and initiatives are gender-sensitive, pro-poor, and inclusive in elementary education. To promote enrollment, full participation, completion, and quality learning outcomes in primary education, infrastructure, facilities, teaching-learning supplies, and processes will be carefully considered in schools and learning centres to create child-friendly and enabling environments.
The Kaduna MEAL Assistant will help create and manage a strong project Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) system. The post requires creating and implementing a Save the Children International (SCI)-compliant MEAL system.
The role holder will support evaluations/assessments, evaluate program progress and quality, document lessons learned, and report periodically.
MEAL processes must be gender-sensitive, inclusive, and participatory, including with children.
Key Areas Of Accountability of MEAL Assistant
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Create robust MEAL strategies, systems, procedures, and tools for the project in accordance with SCI and donor specifications.
- Provide MEAL technical support to partners.
- Take the lead on data collecting for the project, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Conduct a thorough data analysis to extract relevant insights and suggestions from project data.
- Implement quarterly monitoring and accountability actions to improve project performance, such as quality benchmarks and/or data quality evaluations.
- Document data gathering and analysis findings, resulting in complete and useful reports.
- Maintain monthly changes to the SCI’s Project reporting Information Management & Evidence (PRIME) system logframe to appropriately reflect project progress and successes.
- Monitor program implementation to ensure that activities are carried out in accordance with established standards and norms.
Accountability
- Ensure that the project is following the three pillars of accountability: information sharing, participation and feedback, reporting, and providing necessary documentation.
- Assist in the establishment of effective accountability procedures, ensuring that project participants’ perspectives are heard during project adaptation/design and execution.
- Conduct periodic community feedback and stakeholder meetings to collect input, feedback, and insights into the program, thereby increasing community engagement and encouraging openness and accountability.
Knowledge Management and Learning
- Participate actively in program learning activities by initiating conversations and knowledge-sharing sessions among project teams.
- Help with the archiving of project documents in the Resource Centre.
- Help in the creation of case studies and success stories for the project.
- Ensure that project learnings are documented and reflected in programming choices.
Safeguarding
- Ensure that risk assessments are completed prior to any data gathering involving children.
- Before collecting any data, ensure that the enumerators have been trained.
General
- Comply with SCI policies and practices regarding child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities, and other applicable rules and procedures.
- Undertake any other MEAL-related responsibilities as directed by the line manager, according to project needs and challenges.

Qualifications for MEAL Assistant
- A minimum of a BSc or equivalent qualification in Education, Demography, Statistics, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE.
Essential
- At least two years of experience working in MEAL for humanitarian or development organizations.
- Experience administering education or child protection initiatives is an added benefit.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to express technical concerns clearly and persuasively.
- Excellent English communication abilities, both written and spoken.
- Commitment to and awareness of Save the Children’s goals, beliefs, and principles, which include rights-based initiatives and child engagement.
