The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a Federal Government organization in charge of building indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, is accepting applications for the 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships.

This program allows students to study specific programs at selected partner universities abroad, gaining access to world-class training, research facilities, and global knowledge.

About PTDF 2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme

1) Strategic Partnerships

For the 2026 award, applications will be limited to PTDF partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia, where the Fund believes scholarship standards will be maintained and the Scheme’s objectives will be best met.

2) Courses

The scholarship portal provides access to a comprehensive list of supported courses and application forms.

3) UK PhD to be Conducted as Split-Site at CPESK

With the establishment of the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), PTDF advances its strategic goal of enhancing local capability and domesticating important aspects of its human capital development programs in accordance with national priorities.

CPESK is being positioned as a hub for world-class postgraduate education, high-impact research, and robust industry-academia collaboration.

As a result, for the 2026 academic year, PhD scholarships in the United Kingdom will once again be confined to split-site courses, in which successful students will conduct research while splitting residency between CPESK and designated UK partner universities:

Universities: 

  • Robert Gordon University, 
  • University of Strathclyde, and 
  • University of Portsmouth

Selection Process, Criteria and Requirements

PTDF scholarships are quite competitive. Only those with extraordinary merit and suitability will be evaluated.

Following an initial evaluation of provided qualifications, the top applicants in each category from each state will be called to an interview. A selection committee will evaluate candidates based on (but not limited to) the following criteria:

  • Academic merit (quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, and related professional certifications)
  • Relevant publications (for PhD aspirants only)
  • Membership in professional bodies
  • The feasibility and relevance of the study plan/research proposal
  • Relevance of earlier studies to the oil and gas industry and the current program/research.

REQUIREMENTS

A) MSc Applicants must:

  • Have a least of Second Class Upper (2.1) in the first degree, or a Second Class Lower (2.2) with appropriate industry experience.
  • Completed the obligatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
  • Be computer literate.
  • Have five (5) O’Level credits, which include English Language and Mathematics.
  • Submit a Statement of Purpose (maximum 500 words) outlining the rationale for the proposed study, its relevance to the oil and gas industry, and its predicted impact on national development.
  • Have a National Identity Number (NIN) and ensure it is completely confirmed before applying (NIMC verification charges apply).

B) PhD Applicants must:

  • Have completed the obligatory NYSC.
  • Be computer literate.
  • Have five (5) O’Level credits, which include English Language and Mathematics.
  • Have at least a Second Class Lower (2.2) in your first degree and a strong postgraduate degree.
  • Submit a research proposal related to the oil and gas business (maximum five (5) pages) that covers:

Topic;

Introduction/background;

Objectives;

Methodology and

Data collecting method

Have a NIN and ensure it is confirmed before applying (NIMC verification charges apply).

In addition:

  • All lecturers must also provide a letter from their vice-chancellor verifying that they are not currently receiving any other scholarships.

Applicants must scan and upload legible copies of the following papers during the online application:

  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Results NYSC Discharge Certificate
  • WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results with the required PIN(s) (for online verification).
  • Recent passport photo
  • Local Government Identification Letter
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (for PhD aspirants only)
  • Evidence of participation in relevant professional associations.

Important Notes

Applicants are further advised to note the following:

  • The scholarship is for the 2026 academic session.
  • Applications are limited to PTDF-approved courses at PTDF partner institutions.
  • Scholarships will only be awarded for studies relevant to PTDF’s mandate; candidates may be disqualified for programmes deemed not relevant to the oil and gas industry.
  • The proposed course of study must be consistent with the applicant’s prior academic background.
  • Applicants intending to pursue a PhD scholarship under the PTDF/DAAD partnership in Germany are required to secure a research supervisor prior to the final selection interviews.
  • Multiple applications will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Submission of any illegible or falsified documents as part of the application will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Candidates previously sponsored by the Fund for a scholarship category (MSc/PhD) are ineligible to apply again for the same or lower category.
  • Shortlisted candidates invited for interview will be required to present their transcripts; applicants are therefore advised to make transcripts available in advance.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited for aptitude tests, interviews, and assessment centers.
