The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released the updated list of universities authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session, while warning prospective students against enrolling in unaccredited institutions.

In a public notice dated 14 August 2026, the Council reiterated that only universities on its approved list are permitted to run law programmes in Nigeria. Students who gain admission into unaccredited law faculties will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School — a mandatory requirement for call to the Bar.

The Council, which regulates legal education in Nigeria under the Legal Education (Consolidation) Act, cautioned that any university admitting students into a law programme without its approval is acting contrary to extant regulations and will face “appropriate sanctions”.

“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria.”

The notice, signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, also stated that the list would be updated periodically in line with the Council’s statutory mandate

Moratorium on Admissions: Three Universities Restricted

The Council also identified three universities currently under a moratorium on law admissions. These institutions are not permitted to admit new students into their LL.B programmes for specified periods:

  • Baze University, Abuja – three‑year moratorium (2023/2024 to 2025/2026 sessions)
  • Lead City University, Ibadan – five‑year moratorium (2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions)
  • Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil – two‑year moratorium (2024/2025 to 2025/2026 sessions

The Council said these restrictions were approved by its governing body and are intended to ensure compliance with quality standards in legal education

Why Accreditation Matters

The CLE’s warning is particularly significant because graduation from an unaccredited law programme renders a student ineligible for the Nigerian Law School, which is the final gateway to legal practice in Nigeria.

The Council has consistently advised prospective students and their families to verify the accreditation status of any university before seeking admission into an LL.B programme.

The list of approved institutions is expected to be updated periodically as the Council continues its oversight of legal education across the country
