Bauchi State is one of the 36 states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is located in the north-eastern region of the country. It was created on February 3, 1976 and was at this time a part of the North Eastern State.

Current 20 Local Government Areas in Bauchi State Headquarters, and Senatorial Zones
Bauchi State was created in 1976 from the North-Eastern State. At that time, it comprised 16 Local Government Areas, which included the areas that would later become Gombe State. Following the creation of Gombe State in 1996, Bauchi State was left with the 20 LGAs that exist today.
These 20 LGAs are strategically divided into three Senatorial Districts: Bauchi South, Bauchi Central, and Bauchi North.

- Bauchi LGA serves as the state capital and administrative heart, hosting the government house and major urban infrastructure.
- Toro LGA is historically one of the largest local government areas in Nigeria by landmass.
- Alkaleri LGA has gained prominence as the site of the Kolmani River Field oil projects, earning it the nickname the “Oil LGA” of Bauchi.
- Katagum LGA, with its headquarters in Azare, is the commercial nerve centre of the northern zone and a major education hub.
- Ganjuwa LGA has its headquarters in Kafin Madaki, located approximately 47 kilometres from the state capital along Kano Road
Proposed 29 New Local Government Areas (2025)
On 27th October 2025, the Bauchi State House of Assembly passed a bill to create 29 new additional Local Government Areas. Governor Bala Mohammed subsequently signed the bill into law.
The law was then forwarded to the National Assembly for constitutional ratification, as required by Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
If approved, Bauchi State’s total number of LGAs would increase from 20 to 49.

Legislative Status
It is important to note that these 29 proposed LGAs are currently inchoate, meaning they are not yet legally operational. As explicitly stated in the law forwarded to the National Assembly:
“The additional Local Government Areas listed in Schedule II to this Law are inchoate until such a time as the National Assembly shall pass an Act to make consequential provisions with respect to the names of the said additional Local Government Areas.”
The National Assembly’s Committee on Constitution Review must consider and pass enabling legislation before these new LGAs can be formally established
Bauchi State at a Glance
Bauchi State comprises about 49,119 square kilometres and is found in Northeastern Nigeria. Bauchi State has borders with Kaduna to the West and Kano and Jigawa States to the North, Taraba and Plateau to the South and Gombe and Yobe to the East.
