Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, was incorporated in 1946 as Nigerian Brewery Limited. Its first product, Star Lager Beer, rolled off the Lagos Brewery line in 1949. Over the decades, the company expanded significantly:
- 1957–1982: Commissioned breweries in Aba, Kaduna, and Ibadan.
- 1990: Renamed to Nigerian Breweries Plc following the Companies and Allied Matters Act.
- 1993–2008: Expanded with a fifth brewery in Enugu, launched Ama Brewery in Enugu State (2003), and added a modern malting plant in Aba (2008).
- 2011–2012: Acquired and merged with Sona Systems (with breweries in Ota and Kaduna) and Life Breweries (Onitsha), gaining a new malting plant in Kaduna.
- 2014: Merged with Consolidated Breweries Plc, adding breweries in Ijebu-Ode, Awo-Omamma, and Makurdi, which became distribution centers alongside Onitsha.
Today, Nigerian Breweries operates nine fully functional breweries and two malting plants, with a vast distribution and sales network across Nigeria.
