Since 2024 corps members have received ₦33,000 on a monthly basis. NYSC allowance received a significant increase with the signing into law of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which stipulates that the national minimum wage is set at ₦70,000.
As of 2026 and going forward, the monthly NYSC allowance is ₦77,000.
How is this estimated?
The law states that corps members are entitled to the national minimum wage and an additional amount that is 10% of the national minimum wage.
It is as follows: ₦70,000 + ₦7,000.
This is the baseline salary. The corps members will all receive the minimum salary, irrespective of the course they studied or the Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
When do you get paid?
Allowances are typically processed between the 25th and 30th of every month. Your first payment usually hits your account toward the end of the 3-week orientation camp, with subsequent payments coming monthly until November/December .
State Government “Top-Ups”: The Game Changer
While the base pay is set by the federal government, a few state governments introduced “State Allowances” (or “top-ups”) in 2026.
This is where the pay scale starts to differ substantially based on your posting.
Some states offer significantly higher pay while others offer nothing. The breakdown of the most significant state offerings in 2026 is as follows:
1. Zamfara State (Particularly High Pay for Medics)
In 2026, Zamfara State was the highest paying state for medical corps members, established by Governor Dauda Lawal.
Medical doctors receive a ₦150,000 monthly state top-up. Along with the federal top-up of ₦77,000, they receive over ₦227,000 monthly, which is a significant pay.
Other health workers, including nurses and lab scientists, receive a ₦50,000 state top-up. General corps members receive a ₦20,000 top-up.
2. Abia State (The Otti Impact)
Governor Alex Otti signed into law an increase in the top-up of Abia state corps members by 1,150%.
All corps members receive a ₦20,000 state top-up. Those in government establishments (offices) receive an extra ₦10,000 ( ₦30,000 in total).
Medical personnel and teachers again receive an additional ₦30,000 (₦50,000 in total).
Corps members receiving that pay in Abia State (combined with the federal pay of ₦77,000) earn a total of ₦127,000 monthly.
3. Akwa Ibom State
Governor Umo Eno authorized a 300% increase to that state’s contribution.
Corps members now receive a ₦20,000 state top-up, making the total amount they take home monthly ₦97,000.
4. Kaduna State (Under Review)
The state’s corps membership stipends were formally reviewed in the first half of 2026. The Kaduna State NYSC coordinator indicated the review was as a result of the high cost of living.
The Reality Check: Most other states (like Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, etc.) currently do not pay a mandatory state allowance. You will rely solely on the ₦77,000 federal pay unless your specific employer offers something.
PPA Stipends: Your “Salary” from your Boss
The part of the NYSC financial structure that is most confusing, is likely the most misunderstood portion as well. The ₦77,000 salary offered by the government is your monthly allowance. Many companies supplement that by providing an extra stipend on top of that.
If you are sent to a Private Company, a Bank, or an Oil Company, you are likely to receive a monthly stipend.
- Public Schools/Ministries: ₦0 – ₦10,000 (if at all)
- Banks/Fintech: ₦50,000 – ₦150,000
- Tech Startups (Lagos/Abuja): ₦30,000 – ₦120,000

The NYSC vs. NELFUND Connection (2026)
For graduates of the class of 2026, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) represents a significant financial shift.
If you received a loan to pay for university, you must start repaying it once you receive your NYSC certificate. The government of Nigeria has made it clear that this will not be an immediate repayment.
