The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched the call for applications for its 2027 Young Graduates Immersion Programme, offering young professionals from across the region a fully paid, one-year opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the heart of West African regional integration.

Since its beginning in 2017, the course has taught over 200 young graduates in almost all ECOWAS institutions including the ECOWAS Commission Departments, West African Health Organization, GIABA, Court of Justice and several ECOWAS Agencies.

What Is the ECOWAS Young Graduates Immersion Programme?

The Young Graduates Immersion Programme is a one-year, on-site, full-time professional immersion opportunity for young graduates from ECOWAS member states. 

They work in ECOWAS institutions, specialist agencies or Permanent Representations and contribute to programs that enhance regional integration in West Africa.

According to ECOWAS, the programme is designed to:

“Allow young professionals to actively contribute to regional integration strategies while developing high-level skills alongside sector experts.”

The programme is coordinated by the Directorate of Education, Science and Culture under the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Human Development and Social Affairs

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

To be considered for the 2027 Young Graduates Immersion Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Citizenship

  • Must be a citizen of one of the 15 ECOWAS member states:
    • Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo

Age

  • Must be between 18 and 32 years old at the time of application
  • The age criterion is applied at the time of application — not at the time the programme begins in 2027

Educational Qualification

  • Must hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent certificate from a recognised institution
  • Degree should be in a relevant field for the position applied for

Language Skills

  • Must be proficient in at least one of the ECOWAS working languages: English, French, or Portuguese

Participants in the Young Graduates Immersion Programme receive:

Financial Benefits

  • Monthly stipend for the full duration of the programme
  • Flight ticket (for candidates posted outside their home country – from country of origin to host country)

Note: For the previous batch, graduates posted to their home country received $500 monthly, while those posted outside received $800 monthly plus a return flight ticket. ECOWAS has not yet announced the stipend amounts for Batch 2027

  4. Provide academic and professional background details
  5. Upload required documents:
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) – PDF format
    • Motivation/Cover letter – PDF format
    • Academic certificate(s)
    • Passport or National ID
  6. Review all information for accuracy
  7. Submit the completed application before the deadline

Important: Do not send documents by email. Only applications submitted through the official portal will be considered.

Selection Process

The selection process is based on the principles of merit, fairness, transparency, and equal opportunities and involves the following stages:

  1. Online submission of applications via the programme’s dedicated platform
  2. Assessment of applications by a selection committee set up by the ECOWAS Commission
  3. Institutional approval of the selected candidates
  4. Notification to successful candidates
