What Is the European Commission Blue Book Traineeship?
The Blue Book Traineeship is the European Commission’s flagship traineeship programme and offers:
- Practical experience in EU policymaking and administration
- Professional skills development

- A paid experience – with a living allowance of around €1,538 per month
- Work placements in Brussels, Luxembourg, or other locations across the European Union where other EU agencies are based
Trainees work in a multicultural environment, contributing to the daily work of the European Commission, its executive agencies, decentralised agencies or bodies, Commissioners’ Cabinets, and the European External Action Service
Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)
For the 2027 session, the program’s eligibility has been broadened; for the first time, graduates of Vocational Education and Training (VET) can now apply alongside university graduates.
For university graduates:
- Completed a 3-year higher education degree (EQF level 6, equivalent to a Bachelor’s cycle).
- No more than 6 weeks of work experience in an EU organization, body, or agency.
- Proficient in at least two EU official languages, one of which must be English, French, or German (minimum B2 level or native tongue).
For VET Graduates (NEW for 2027):
- Successfully completed a VET degree (EQF level 3, 4, or 5), excluding qualifications of general education
- No prior work experience exceeding 6 weeks in any EU institution
- Very good knowledge of two EU official languages, with the first being English, French, or German at minimum B2 level (or mother tongue)

Traineeship Types
The European Commission offers three types of traineeships:
