Brief History of Egbin Power PLC

Egbin Power PLC began in 1986 as a thermal plant, created to help Nigeria with the rising demands for electricity. Egbin was built with a total generating capacity of 1320 megawatts (MW), which was spread across six self-sufficient generating units, each with the ability to produce 220MW. 

At the time, this was a revolutionary advancement which positioned Egbin at the top of power plants in Nigeria.

Egbin Power PLC was previously owned and managed by the federal government until it was privatized in 2013 as a part of Nigeria’s power sector reforms. 

The plant was bought by the KEPCO consortium led by Sahara Group, who undertook the task of renovating the plant and improving its operational functionality. 

There has been a considerable investment since that time to upgrade the infrastructure, maintain the generating units, and optimize output.

The new management adopted aggressive rehabilitation strategies after they assumed control over the plant so that all six units could be operational. Egbin Power achieved its highest output in over a decade by generating 1,100 MW in early 2015, which is an impressive figure.

Challenges Facing Egbin Power PLC

1. Problems with Supply of Gas  

As a power supplier, Egbin Power does natural gas thermal power generation, which means that the gas supplied needs to be regular – otherwise, the operation of the plant is also impaired. There are security threats in the region gas pipelines pass through, as well as bad facilities. Those are the major reasons. 

2. Limitations Associated with Transmission and Distribution  

Even with all the electricity generated by Egbin, there are still gaps in transmission and distribution of electric power in Nigeria. This makes it impossible at times to get the required capacity out of the generated power. This leads to wastage and underutilization of the plant’s capacity.

3. Regulatory and Policy Challenges
