About Malteser International
Malteser International has been active in Nigeria since 2017. We are currently operating in the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) sector in Northeast Nigeria – and more especially in Borno State – to enhance the lives of both IDP populations and host communities.
We work on WASH with the aim of improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene and this includes NFI distribution, solarisation of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Job Description
As a Health Officer at Malteser International, you will play a critical role in cholera outbreak response and public health programming in Borno State. Your key responsibilities include:
Clinical & Patient Management
- Assess and manage patients with acute watery diarrhoea/cholera
- Administer ORS for mild cases and stabilize patients
- Promptly refer moderate and severe cases to Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs)
- Oversee the daily functioning of assigned Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs)
- Ensure compliance with national cholera treatment protocols and uninterrupted service delivery
Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)
- Enforce IPC measures, including hand hygiene, proper PPE use, and environmental cleaning
- Ensure safe waste management and prompt reporting of IPC concerns
Health Education & Community Engagement
- Conduct health education on cholera prevention, hygiene, sanitation, safe water practices, and early treatment seeking
- Strengthen community referral systems
Monitoring & Reporting
- Keep accurate patient and referral records
- Submit regular reports and support disease surveillance
- Monitor ORP performance and collaborate with health authorities and humanitarian partners
Supply Chain & Inventory Management
- Monitor and maintain adequate stocks of ORS, Zinc, PPE, medicines, and consumables
- Ensure proper inventory management, storage, and timely replenishment
Organizational Compliance
- Adhere to organizational policies, including safeguarding and PSEAH standards
- Report safeguarding concerns and ensure accountability to affected populations
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (B.NSc.), Public Health, or a related health discipline
- Valid professional registration where applicable
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in humanitarian or public health programmes
- Experience in cholera outbreak response, emergency health, or communicable disease control
- Previous experience working in Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs), Cholera Treatment Units (CTUs) , Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs) , or with NGOs/international humanitarian organizations is highly desirable
Technical Skills
- Strong clinical assessment and patient management skills
- Knowledge of cholera treatment protocols and IPC standards
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Excellent organizational, reporting, communication, and supervisory skills
Additional Qualifications (Added Advantage)
- Additional training in cholera case management, IDSR (Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response) , Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) , or emergency health
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English is required
- Knowledge of Hausa and Kanuri is an added advantage
Other Requirements
- Position is based in Maiduguri with frequent travel to project sites
- Availability to work weekends, public holidays, and extended hours during outbreak response
