The inaugural Adeola Oyinlade & Co National Essay Competition is organised and sponsored by Adeola Oyinlade & Co., Nigeria’s largest full-service legal company. The competition is intended to test law students’ abilities to critically examine a specific issue within the context of applicable legislation and generate compelling responses.  

Topic

Taxation and Development in Nigeria: Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Implementation

Rationale

Nigeria is once again on the verge of changing the Nigerian tax landscape with several Tax Reform bills. Are taxes representative of Nigeria’s development? Is there a loophole in the policy-making and implementation process? Students are expected to respond to these questions. 

Eligibility for the 2025 Adeola Oyinlade & Co National Essay Competition

This essay competition is open to law students at the 100-500 level from all Nigerian tertiary institutions (federal, state, and private). 

Guidelines For Submissions

  • Submissions are accepted on an individual basis. Co-authoring an essay is not authorised.
  • All writings must be unique and completely written by the candidate. Plagiarism is not tolerated. Original.
  • Entrants are allowed to submit just one entry.
  • Submissions should not exceed 1500 words. It must also be free of photos and other graphical illustrations. Footnotes are not considered part of the word count. 
  • Essays must be written in English and submitted in Microsoft Word format. Font: Times New Roman – Size 12, double-spaced; alignment: justified. 
  • All essays must be properly referenced using the OSCOLA format.
  • Entrants’ school and other personal information shall not appear on the manuscript submitted, EXCEPT THEIR FULL NAME. This is to prevent favouritism and increase transparency.
  • Submission: Essays should be sent electronically to admin@adeolaoyinlade.com with the subject line “The 2025 Adeola Oyinlade & Co National Essay Competition for Law Students in All Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria“.

  • It is not open to law graduates (additional competitions are scheduled for law graduates and students at the Nigerian Law School later this year).

Deadline for submission 

  • All essays must be submitted in their entirety by 12 midnight on February 21, 2025. No late submissions will be allowed. 

 Evaluation criteria

  • Essays will be graded on their originality, clarity of expression, depth of analysis, relevance to the topic, spelling and grammar, and adherence to the contest rules.
  • Relevance: Consistent with the theme, with a focus on the role of taxation in achieving the SDGs in Nigeria.

PRIZES for the 2025 Adeola Oyinlade & Co National EssayThree cash prizes and five types of awards:

Winner: NGN 300,000 (with internship at Adeola Oyinlade & Co.) and publication of an essay on Mondaq.

First runner-up: NGN 200,000.00 (+ internship at Adeola Oyinlade & Co.).

Second Runner-up: N100,000.00 (with internship at Adeola Oyinlade & Co.)

4th–10th entrants: NGN 50,000.00 each (+ internship at Adeola Oyinlade & Co.). 

  • Certificate of Participation for all participants whose entries met the essay submission standards.
