Agricultural Specialist at the U.S. Embassy

Job Description

  • The U.S Embassy in Abuja is looking for competent and suitable candidates to fill the job of Agricultural Specialist at the Foreign Agricultural Services (FAS) Office. 
  • This entry-level specialist position provides a key link between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Nigerian agricultural stakeholders, delivering crucial intelligence and advocacy to promote U.S. agricultural interests in the region.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Agricultural Specialist (entry-level specialist) is responsible for representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) in Nigeria. The incumbent researches and prepares reports that provide agricultural commodity and trade policy intelligence, best prospects and advice for U.S. agricultural stakeholders and on other relevant topics for assigned agricultural commodities. 

Responsibilities also include advocating for U.S. agricultural interests by implementing projects, identifying appropriate actions, and resolving trade problems. 

The incumbent identifies, develops, and maintains professional and social relationships and consultative contacts (working-to-mid levels) to gain cooperation on substantive agricultural matters.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet either Option 1 or Option 2 to qualify for this position. Please address all relevant experience in your ERA application under “Major Duties and Responsibilities.”

Option 1 (Education + Experience):

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or International Trade.
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of professional work experience in agricultural economics, agricultural policy, commodity trade, or marketing analysis/research—with significant emphasis on analytical writing and report generation.
  • Note: NYSC Certificate/Exemption/Exclusion document is required.

Option 2 (Higher Experience without Completed Degree):

  • Education: Two (2) years of university studies in any field.
  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of professional work experience in agricultural economics, agricultural policy, commodity trade, or marketing analysis/research—with significant emphasis on analytical writing and report generation.

Language Proficiency:

  • English: Fluent speaking, reading, and writing skills are required.
  • French: Good working knowledge (speaking, reading, and writing) is required.
  • Please address this language requirement in your ERA application.

Required Job Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of host-country agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies.
  • In-depth understanding of host government structure, including the responsibilities of various Ministries and offices, as well as congressional and legislative processes related to economic, trade, and agricultural policy.
  • Solid comprehension of international agreements pertaining to agricultural policy and agricultural economic supply/demand theories and concepts.

Salary

USD $37,955 per annum.
