About African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)
In collaboration with Afreximbank, King’s College Hospital London opened the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja, an advanced medical institution that aims to transform Africa’s healthcare system.
The Abuja AMCE was built to provide unprecedented care through cutting edge research and education, as well as to tackle the dire gaps in healthcare systems.
The collaborative effort with King’s College secures world-class clinical teaching, comprehensive research, and professional advancement, which further fosters Abuja’s innovative core.
Meanwhile, the AMCE aims to serve the continent’s rising demand for high quality oncology, cardiology, hematology, and primary care services.
The Centre will also enhance Abuja’s expansion into a complete 500-bed facility with comprehensive care in phases over six years.
Set to launch in 2025, this flagship facility in Abuja is a key part of Afreximbank’s network of healthcare facilities.
Job Purpose
- The Painter/Handyman will be in charge of completing various maintenance and repair jobs at AMCE to ensure the facility’s upkeep and efficiency. Â
- This function will ensure the premises’ visual appeal and safety through painting, small repairs, and regular upkeep. Â
- The position will be responsible for keeping the environment clean and functional for both employees and guests.
Core Responsibilities for Painter/Handyman at African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)
Painting Management:
- Paint and decorate internal and outdoor hospital surfaces, such as patient rooms, hallways, offices, and common areas, while adhering to the hospital’s aesthetic and safety standards.
- Perform small repairs and maintenance duties, such as patching leaks, repairing doors, windows, or furniture, and addressing any concerns with the hospital’s infrastructure. Ensure that all repairs are completed on time and without causing significant disruption to hospital operations.
- Perform routine examinations and maintenance of hospital fixtures such doors, windows, furnishings, plumbing, and other equipment. Address minor faults before they become severe problems, hence increasing the facility’s total longevity.
- Ensure that all work conforms with hospital safety rules, such as the use of non-toxic paints and materials, sufficient signage, and repairs that fulfill hospital construction codes.
- Respond to hospital staff maintenance requests by prioritizing work orders and ensuring that jobs are completed on schedule based on urgency and material availability.
Facility maintenance and upkeep:
- Maintain and repair hospital equipment, such as beds, medical furniture, and other movable hospital components. Ensure that all equipment is in functioning order, safe to use, and meets hospital standards.
- Make sure all work locations are clean and free of hazardous materials. To avoid creating harmful working situations, store tools and materials properly after use.
- Provide quick help in the event of an emergency, such as power outages, damaged fixtures, or other issues that may have an impact on patient care or hospital operations.
- Keep an organized inventory of painting materials, maintenance tools, and supplies. Ensure that stock levels are routinely reviewed and reorders are placed to avoid shortages.
- Collaborate with other hospital departments (e.g., facilities management, clinical staff) to plan repairs and maintenance activities that may impact hospital operations or patient care.
Building and Grounds Maintenance:
- Perform outside maintenance tasks, such as painting hospital exteriors, maintaining outdoor signage, and basic landscaping, to ensure the hospital projects a clean and professional image.
- Ensure that all hospital restrooms and common areas are well-maintained, including painting, cleaning, and minor repairs, to make them functional and sanitary.
- Dispose of any waste or hazardous materials used in painting or repairs in accordance with hospital and regulatory safety guidelines.
Facility Improvement Projects:
- Assist with modest modifications and upgrades as part of a hospital improvement project. Collaborate with contractors, architects, and the facilities management team to support larger-scale renovations, assuring the building’s functionality during development.
- Provide feedback and support with interior design and layout adjustments, ensuring that newly painted sections or fixtures add value to the hospital’s overall atmosphere.
- Provide suggestions for facility improvements, such as repainting, upgrades, or other repairs, to keep the hospital in top condition.
Administrative and Documentation Responsibilities:
- Keep track of finished work, including the supplies used, time spent, and any specific requirements for each job. Maintain accurate documentation for all tasks, including follow-ups and work completions.
- Work within the budget for materials and supplies. Make suggestions for cost-effective alternatives for continuing repairs and enhancements.
Qualifications for Painter/Handyman at African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma; bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
- Completing a vocational training program in painting, carpentry, or a related skill is preferable.
Professional Requirements
- Certification in painting, construction, or another similar sector is preferred.
Experience requirements
- Experience in a healthcare or big institutional context is advantageous.
- Proven ability to perform a wide range of maintenance and repair activities, including electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work.
Competency requirements
- Â Understanding of painting procedures, surface preparation, and various paints and finishes.
- Â Knowledge of fundamental plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repair processes.
- Â Understanding of safety rules and procedures.
