About African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)

In collaboration with Afreximbank, King’s College Hospital London opened the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja, an advanced medical institution that aims to transform Africa’s healthcare system. 

The Abuja AMCE was built to provide unprecedented care through cutting edge research and education, as well as to tackle the dire gaps in healthcare systems. 

The collaborative effort with King’s College secures world-class clinical teaching, comprehensive research, and professional advancement, which further fosters Abuja’s innovative core. 

Meanwhile, the AMCE aims to serve the continent’s rising demand for high quality oncology, cardiology, hematology, and primary care services.

The Centre will also enhance Abuja’s expansion into a complete 500-bed facility with comprehensive care in phases over six years.

Set to launch in 2025, this flagship facility in Abuja is a key part of Afreximbank’s network of healthcare facilities. 

Job Purpose

  • Porters will be in charge of the safe and efficient movement of patients, equipment, supplies, and other goods within the hospital.  
  • This position will enable the timely and dependable transfer of commodities, contributing to the smooth running of clinical services and a positive patient experience throughout the hospital.

Core Responsibilities for Porter at African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)

Patient Transportation

  • Transport patients safely between departments using wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds.
  •  Assist patients with mobility and transfers as needed.
  •  Ensure patients’ comfort and safety during transportation.
  •  Confirm patient identification before and during transportation.
  •  Follow infection control guidelines during patient travel.

 Equipment and Supply Transportation

  •  Move medical equipment, supplies, and materials about the facility.
  •  Ensure objects are handled and transported securely.
  •  Deliver products to specific places quickly and efficiently.
  •  Keep transportation equipment clean, including wheelchairs and stretchers.
  •  Report damaged or faulty equipment.

 Specimen & Sample Delivery

  •  Carry laboratory specimens, samples, and other sensitive goods.
  •  Adhere to stringent guidelines for handling and labeling specimens.
  •  Ensure timely and accurate delivery to the lab.
  •  Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  •  Follow biohazard safety precautions.

 General Portering Duties

 Help set up and rearrange furniture for meetings and events.

 Deliver mail and packages in the hospital.

 Assist with additional responsibilities assigned by supervisors.

 Maintain clean and organized work areas.

 Report maintenance faults and safety dangers.

Qualifications for Porter at African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)

Educational requirement

  •  HND/BSc in Health Care Administration or a comparable discipline.

 Professional Requirements

  •  Attendance at at least one training session on basic life support and equipment handling.

 Experience requirements

  •  1-3 years’ experience in the medical profession.

 Competency requirement

  •  Ability to properly express and comprehend instructions.
  •  Possession of basic life support abilities, such as CPR. 
  •  Able to respond to medical emergencies.

 Skill requirements

  •  Capable of operating wheelchairs, stretchers, and other modes of transportation safely.
  •  Understanding of appropriate lifting and moving techniques.
  •  A basic awareness of medical terminology and processes.
  •  Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  •  The ability to follow directions and work independently. 
  •  Basic computing abilities for using communication devices.
