About Ubulu Africa

Ubulu Africa establishes venture and innovation infrastructure for African markets. We develop and expand systems that drive the next iteration of African innovation, including platform products, advisory services, and innovation programs.

The digital platforms that are the foundation of this project are developed and constructed by our Engineering & AI team. We are seeking a Systems Engineer to fortify the architectural foundations of our work.

This individual should possess a meticulous understanding of the structure of complex systems, the connections between components, and the resilience of platforms as they are subjected to increasing demands.

About the Role

This is a position that requires an engineer who is equally concerned with the design and construction of a system.

You will contribute to the architecture of Ubulu Africa’s digital platforms, which will establish the structure of services, the management of integrations, and the impact of technical decisions made today on the future.

You will work in conjunction with the Engineering & AI team to ensure that the product development process is coherent, scalable, and well-documented from the architecture level down. This will involve the application of systems thinking.

What You Will Do

➮ Design and document system architectures for Ubulu Africa’s digital platforms and services – covering structure, integration patterns, data flows, and scalability considerations

➮ Translate product and programme requirements into clear technical specifications that the engineering team can build from with confidence

➮ Identify and address architectural risks – evaluating trade-offs and making recommendations that balance ambition with engineering pragmatism

➮ Define and maintain technical standards and integration patterns across the platform portfolio

➮ Collaborate with cloud and platform, data and AI, and product teams to ensure architectural coherence across all layers of the stack

➮ Review technical implementations and provide guidance to keep the team aligned with architectural decisions

➮ Maintain technical documentation that keeps the team oriented and makes onboarding straightforward

What You Bring

➮ 5 or more years in systems engineering, software architecture, or a closely related technical discipline

➮ A strong track record designing complex systems – thinking clearly about structure, integration, scalability, and how things fail

➮ Experience translating business and product requirements into sound, defensible technical architecture

➮ The ability to communicate architectural decisions clearly to both technical teammates and non-technical stakeholders

➮ A collaborative working style – you understand that good architecture is developed with teams, not handed down to them

➮ Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows is an advantage

➮ Experience in African or emerging market technology contexts is welcome
