In collaboration with Afreximbank, King’s College Hospital London opened the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja, an advanced medical institution that aims to transform Africa’s healthcare system. 

The Abuja AMCE was built to provide unprecedented care through cutting edge research and education, as well as to tackle the dire gaps in healthcare systems. 

The collaborative effort with King’s College secures world-class clinical teaching, comprehensive research, and professional advancement, which further fosters Abuja’s innovative core. 

Meanwhile, the AMCE aims to serve the continent’s rising demand for high quality oncology, cardiology, hematology, and primary care services.

The Centre will also enhance Abuja’s expansion into a complete 500-bed facility with comprehensive care in phases over six years.

Set to launch in 2025, this flagship facility in Abuja is a key part of Afreximbank’s network of healthcare facilities. 

Job Purpose

  • The Senior Resident Doctor is in charge of delivering clinical treatment to cancer and blood problem patients under the supervision of senior consultants.  
  • This function entails diagnosing, creating treatment strategies, and overseeing patient care in a multidisciplinary setting.  
  • The Senior Resident will also help mentor junior residents and medical students while they continue their professional development in the residency program.

Core Responsibilities of Senior Resident Doctor/Senior Registrar at AMCE

Clinical Expertise

  • Under the direction of top consultants, perform complete examinations, diagnosis, and treatment planning for cancer patients and hematological illnesses.
  • Assist with the performance and interpretation of diagnostic tests such as biopsies, blood tests, and imaging studies.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to create and implement treatment programs that include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment strategies depending on clinical evaluations and patient responses.
  • Senior clinicians can help you manage oncological and haematological emergencies such tumor lysis syndrome, neutropenic sepsis, and severe anemia.

Emergency Care and Response.

  • In coordination with the medical team, assist in the rapid examination of patients to evaluate the severity of their diseases and to prioritize care.
  • Perform life-saving techniques (e.g., CPR, intubation) to stabilize severely ill patients and prevent further deterioration while supervised.
  • Order and evaluate diagnostic tests (e.g., labs, imaging) to promptly identify underlying issues and direct treatment.
  • Work with emergency teams to provide timely interventions and smooth transitions of care.

Clinical Audits and Compliance

  • With assistance from senior specialists, ensure compliance with appropriate authorities’ clinical standards and legislation.
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives and clinical audits to ensure that high-quality care continues.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records while complying to confidentiality regulations.

Patient Education & Advocacy

  • Educate patients and their families about their illnesses, treatment options, potential side effects, and preventive care.
  • Encourage patient-centered treatment by including patients in decision-making and treating issues with respect and support.
  • Advocate for patients’ access to advanced therapies and palliative care services.

Leadership and Team Coordination

  • Participate in patient care rounds and help coordinate interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Mentor and support junior residents, medical students, and allied health professionals who work under supervision.
  • Contribute to case discussions and collaborative decision-making in challenging patient situations.

 Educational Mentoring and Training

  • Assist in the teaching of junior residents, interns, and medical students by offering assistance under the supervision of senior doctors.
  • Participate in case discussions and encourage clinical learning to help junior staff progress.
  • Review case notes and provide critical suggestions to help improve documentation and clinical abilities.

Strategic Development and Service Improvement

Contribute to clinical audits, design departmental guidelines, and assist in service improvement projects.

Participate in research and academic initiatives to increase knowledge of oncology and haematology.

Support public health activities aimed at cancer awareness and preventive programs.

Qualifications

Educational requirements

  •  Medical degree (MBBS, MBChB, or similar) from a recognized institution.
  •  Completing the residency program and meeting professional requirements.
  •  Valid medical license and registration.
  • Membership in relevant medical organisations, such as the Nigerian Cancer Society or its equivalent.

 Experience requirements

  • A minimum of four years of clinical experience in oncology or haematology, including time spent during residency
  • Experience administering chemotherapy, performing haematological procedures, and providing palliative care.
  • Prior experience mentoring or overseeing junior medical professionals is advantageous.

Knowledge requirements

  • A thorough understanding of oncology and haematology, including cancer biology, blood problems, and treatment options.
  • Proficiency in performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as blood smears, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging examinations.
  • Experience with national and international clinical guidelines and best practices.

 Skill requirements

  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills required for managing difficult cases under supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with patients, families, and medical professionals.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required for effective communication in therapeutic settings.
